Sparkman & Stephens: Evolution by Design
Sponsored by Sparkman & Stephens
For 2008, in celebration of Olin Stephens’ 100th birthday, the Museum of Yachting will present an exhibit about the renowned yacht design firm of Sparkman & Stephens. The main focus will be the creative genius and relationships of the people who created so many successful and beautiful yachts - great men such as Olin and Rod Stephens; the “alumni” from the S&S firm, talented draftsmen and designers such as German Frers, Aage Nielsen, Al Mason and David Pedrick who cut their teeth at S&S and then went on to make names for themselves on their own; the builders around the world such as Henry Nevins, Aage Walsted and Bob Derecktor who built the designs.
The centerpiece of the exhibit will be the new build of S&S 6‐Metre yacht Cherokee, design #10 (the whereabouts/existence of the original Cherokee is not known). The plans have been donated to the Museum by Sparkman & Stephens. The build will be supervised by David Stimson of Boothbay Harbor Shipyard. Visitors to the Museum of Yachting will be able to view the work in progress from the second floor gallery which surrounds the workspace below.
