The William H. Combs Miniature Model Collection at IYRS by R. Michael Wall - Now Available For Sale

This superbly produced full color 65 page book, with text and photography by noted ship model expert R. Michael Wall, is a photographic catalogue of a collection of twenty excellently crafted ship models by two of the top marine model artists in this genre, Donald McNarry F.R.S.A. and Lloyd McCaffery. The collection was thoughtfully developed over a period of thirty years by William H. Combs, a West Point graduate, yachtsman, philanthropist, and Pennsylvania businessman with a life long interest in sailing.

The stunning photography shows how the models range in artistic style as produced by these unique artists. They are portrayed either in a waterline setting or full hull, and some have interior cutaways allowing one to view the inside accommodations, as well as to better grasp the complex construction of such period vessels. The waterline models incorporate beautifully carved wood and artistically painted seas and convincing sail configurations, while many of the full hull models are open-framed and have minute hand painted work-action figures above and below deck, all adding a further dimension and scope to each model’s presentation. All but one of the models have been built to very small scales, of 32’ = 1” or 1/16” =1’ resulting in models seven to twenty-four inch long. However there is one 3/8” = 1’ scale model of the classic sailing yacht Coronet, which is the largest in the collection measuring 50” in length. Each replica is intricately made employing the finest woods and materials, and finished to the highest standard.

The two part collection of models discusses the important and individual approaches that these two international renowned artists achieve. One will clearly read and see not only about the apt level of craftsmanship demonstrated, but will get a glimpse of the process these men use from the development of their research to their decision on the model’s presentation and format. Each of these artists has work in major maritime museum collections and due to their all encompassing dedication are in themselves wonderful inspirations for all others who endeavor in this art form.

The models illustrated in the book are a generous and fitting gift to The International Yacht Restoration School. They will be on exhibit for visitors to see in the school’s new Aquidneck Mill building opening in the near future. It is hoped that these twenty models will inspire the students to be aware of the need for quality and integrity in their own shipwright-craft, which is essential for the success and preservation of historic yachts.

Whether you are a lover of maritime history or enthralled with the workmanship involved in miniature craftsmanship, you will find this book a wonderful addition to your library.

The book is available in hardcover for $250 and in paperback for $50.  To order a copy, please call 401-848-5777.
