Federal Pell Grant Program & Rhode Island State Grants

Pell Grants

Federal Pell Grants are one of the most common and widely access types of federal school grants, and are funded by the U.S. Department of Education. A Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid.

Pell Grants are awarded based on need, only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or a professional degree. Awards for the 2012-2013 year (July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013) range from $555 to $5,550. Generally, students with an EFC (expected family contribution) up to $4,995 are eligible for some type of Pell award. This information is accessed from the FAFSA - simply filling out the form and stating that you want to be considered for a Pell Grant is all that is required to apply for one.
