Housing

Although the school does not provide housing, the Coordinator of Student Services works with incoming students and their families to find housing that is safe and affordable. We help students looking for roommates to connect with each other, share leads that come into the school, and make referrals to outside organizations. Local housing resources include roommate matching organizations and rooming houses, realtor listings, and Internet sites listing Newport area housing resources. IYRS does provide parking for students.  Newport does have a reasonable public transportation system; most students either drive or walk to school.

Job Placement

The Coordinator of Student Services works actively with students and graduates to assist them in realizing their career goals.  Every spring, IYRS holds a Marine Trades Career Day.  Boatyards and marinas from around New England participate looking to hire skilled workers.  One-on-one help is provided preparing the professional tools needed for a successful job search (e.g., resumes, cover letters, and portfolios) and in identifying potential employers.

IYRS provides alumni with access to our website where job listings from employers interested in hiring IYRS graduates are posted.

College Credit at CCRI

An IYRS graduate from the Boatbuilding and Restoration Program entering a degree granting program at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) will be awarded 15 elective credit-hours towards that degree. Contact the Academic Coordinator for more information on the articulation agreement between IYRS and CCRI.
