Emphases are on development of basic surveying skills; this course will introduce the student to the field of yacht and small craft surveying. It will address the technical and market knowledge required of a competent marine surveyor including hull design, construction methods and materials, propulsion and support systems, business of marine survey, professional and legal considerations.

Advanced Marine Surveying (21 hours)

This course takes a close look at the intricacies of yacht and small craft surveying in the recreational marine industry. It will address the technical and market knowledge required of a competent marine surveyor including hull design, construction methods and materials, propulsion and support systems, the business of marine survey, and professional and legal considerations. You will learn how to gather general information regarding the subject vessel to be surveyed including typical systems and sub -systems and how to formulate your inspection into a report of survey for a vessel. The course is designed primarily for students planning to pursue a career in Marine Surveying and more in depth technically related fields.

Spring Commissioning (7 hours)

Gain hands-on experience in order to prepare your boat for launching and a problem-free boating season. The course covers: mechanical maintenance of powertrain, water and waste systems, electrical and trailer; preventative maintenance including antifouling protection; cosmetic maintenance including cleaning and gelcoat restoration; and regulatory checkup –to ensure all Federal and State requirements are met and inspection of safety gear.

Green Boating and Alternative Energies (14 hours)

This weekend course is an introduction to sustainable technologies relevant to the boat owner or boatyard mechanic. Topics include Biodiesel and Biodiesel blends and concerns for the marine diesel, Solar and wind generation technologies, battery maintenance and energy conservation, chemical and paint alternatives, green boating practices and resources for the environmentally conscious boater. You will also be introduced to environmental legislation, industry trends and organizations for further research.

Decommissioning (7 hours)

Gain hands-on experience in preparing your boat for winter storage. The course will cover: cleaning and preparing the hull for storage; engine maintenance of outboards, stern drives and in-board engines; winterizing boat systems including fuel systems, bilges, fresh water systems and the head; preparing the boat's interior, trailer and electronics for the winter; and battery storage and wrapping up the boat. Students go through the complete decommissioning process to insure a worry-free launch in the spring.
