An IYRS Open House in Bristol on April 3 will not only showcase the school’s educational programs: it will also include an in-depth seminar on how to pay for them. IYRS Manager of Student Affairs Debra Huntington will walk attendees through financial aid strategies during the Open House and overview funding sources that have helped students get on a fast track to promising careers. IYRS has shortened its Marine Systems and Composites Technology programs to a six-month curriculum. The school worked with industry input to intensify both programs and focus on the skills that are in demand in today’s marketplace. The goal of the move is to preserve the high standard of training that makes IYRS graduates valued by industry while giving students a quicker route into the job market. Interest amongst employers and career-seekers hit record levels at IYRS Marine Industry Career Day, held on March 3 at the school’s Newport campus. A record 33 marine companies from throughout New England came to the event to connect with individuals interested in marine careers; over 150 career-seekers traveled from seven states to meet potential employers and attend seminars on career and training opportunities. IYRS will hold its annual Marine Industry Career Day on Saturday, March 3. The event will draw employers from throughout the region coming to the school with one goal in mind: to connect with individuals interested in marine industry careers. New scholarship opportunities are available for students entering the school's full-time programs in Fall 2012. In recent years, the school has placed a strong emphasis on building scholarship funding and in 2011 set an ambitious goal of raising $4 million for scholarships during the 2011–2015 period. IYRS will host two Open Houses at its Newport and Bristol campuses in early November. On the afternoon of Tuesday, November 1, IYRS will host an Open House at its waterfront campus in Newport; on Thursday, November 3, IYRS will open its doors to the public at its 5,000-square-foot facility in Bristol. Beginning on November 1, IYRS Restoration Hall will become a place of green education when the school and the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association (RIMTA) launch a series of evening lectures on “Environmental Issues Facing Sailors and the Marine World.” Click above for a press release on the series.
12-Meter Valiant, owned by Gary Gregory, topped the fleet at the Classic Yacht Regatta, capturing overall honors in the regatta's Classic class and the Atlantic and Sappho trophies. The event also stood as the finale of the North American Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, and Trevor Fetter's S&S yawl Black Watch was crowned winner of this three-event circuit at the regatta prize-giving ceremony. The 32nd Annual Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta sponsored by Panerai will take place in Newport over the Labor Day weekend, September 2-4. This event includes two days of racing and will draw a fleet that stands as a time capsule of classic design—from small traditional one-designs to large, majestic yachts built over a century ago. On June 4, IYRS students and their families will be joined by the Rhode Island community to celebrate students' accomplishsments at the annual "Launch Day"--a unique graduation rite where students launch and showcase the boats they spent the past year building and restoring.
The Sixth Annual Marine Industry Career Day will be held on Saturday, March 5, at IYRS Restoration Hall, and marine industry experts and employers are all coming to IYRS with one goal in mind: to connect with individuals interested in marine careers. This one-day event will give career seekers an opportunity to talk with employers and gather information about hiring trends and technology that will give them an edge in the job marketplace.
Leading authority on marine technology Nigel Calder will come to the IYRS Bristol campus to talk about how boats with hybrid technology are finally coming of age. Calder has been a critical player in a $3 million European Union research & development effort to improve the efficiency of hybrid-electric propulsion for commercial and recreational vessels. He is travelling to IYRS to discuss what has changed with the adoption of these systems and the dramatic implications for the world of recreational boating.
