Henry Elliot, a veteran of the composites industry with over three decades of experience in the field, has joined the staff of IYRS as lead instructor for the school's new Composites Technology Program. U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) was joined today by the staffs of the International Yacht Restoration School and the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation to announce federal funding for IYRS' new Composites Technology Program. Senator Reed, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, secured half a million dollars in the fiscal year 2010 appropriations spending bill to help establish this program, which will train skilled technicians and innovators for industries that are central to the state's economic development. Senator Reed was joined by a crowd of marine industry leaders and state and local dignitaries at the announcement, which took place at the IYRS Bristol campus where the composites program will begin this September.
IYRS will launch a full-time Composites Technology Program in 2010, the first of its kind in the rapidly growing composites field. The nine-month program will be offered at the school's teaching facility in Bristol beginning in September 2010 and will give students a foundation in composites processes, techniques, and technology. April 28, 2009: IYRS Completes Mill Building Restoration
On May 14, when IYRS celebrates the official opening of the newly restored 1831 Aquidneck Mill building, the ceremony will mark more than a crowning addition to the school's waterfront campus: this historic building will also play a broader role in the surrounding community. The ceremony begins at the school's campus at 11 am.
March 18, 2009: IYRS Unveils New Facility in Bristol
IYRS will unveil its new Marine Systems Training Facility in Bristol on Saturday, March 28, at the official opening of the Franklin Street Marine Corridor. The visit of U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) to IYRS on April 28 marked a milestone for the restoration of the 1831 Aquidneck Mill Building. Federal funding secured by Senators Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), announced in a press conference at IYRS on April 28, will help fund the restoration of the mill and the revitalization of the "working waterfront" along Lower Thames Street. A groundbreaking ceremony held at IYRS on July 12 marked the official start of the restoration of the 1831 Aquidneck Mill Building, an historic landmark on the school's campus. A crowd of community leaders, local business owners, and IYRS board members and supporters gathered outside this historic building on the National Register of Historic Places to mark the occasion.
May 30, 2007: IYRS and The Museum of Yachting Take First Step toward a Convergence
Following over a year of discussions, the Boards of both organizations have signed a memorandum of understanding that outlines a structure for bringing these two Newport nonprofits together.
IYRS is known for training fine craftsmen in the art of wooden boat building and restoration. With a new one-year program in marine systems, the school expands its educational programs to cover the full range of onboard systems for all types of boats: sail and power, classic and modern.
IYRS has reached an agreement with Robert McNeil of Coronet Restoration Partners that will result in the restoration of the historic schooner yacht Coronet. An official signing ceremony will be held on December 13.
