Boat Donations

Donate your boat to the Museum of Yachting and receive a substantial tax benefit plus personal recognition as a generous supporter of the Museum.

If you have a boat on the market and are having difficulty selling her or you are considering selling but would rather not go through the ongoing hassle of offers, counter offers, continuing storage, repairs and commissions then a charitable donation to the Museum might be the answer.

Depending on your Federal and state income tax bracket a charitable donation of your yacht may give you a tax savings close to its current market value. This is particularly true when considering ongoing expenses while waiting for the boat to sell.

Your boat need not be a “classic” to qualify for the Museum’s donation program. It can be constructed of wood, steel, aluminum, fiberglass or wood composite and needs only to be structurally sound.

Donating your boat is an easy process. Simply contact us by phone or e-mail and we can quickly give you an approximate idea of her donation value. We can also at that time go over the basics of the tax laws (link to Support –Boat Donations, Primer) relating to boats and outline how they would favorably impact on your donation.

The first step to a donation is an appraisal by an accredited marine surveyor.  The Museum has a recommended list of appraisers from which you can choose if necessary. Once the appraisal is completed and found acceptable to you it’s simply a matter of signing and notarizing certain documents which we provide. As soon as the documents are signed MOY takes complete responsibility for the vessel at her current location including insurance, storage, dockage, repairs and transport.
